Lifan Motors inked a deal on May 12 in Chongqing with the British automotive engineering company Ricardo to jointly build a 1.2L turbocharged direct-injection (1.2 TDI) engine for the next generation Lifan 520.

To be developed in the UK and released in two or three years, the 1.2 TDI engine would be able to put out a maximum of 102kW of power and 200Nm of torque, and meet Euro 5 emission standards.

Lifan 520, a low-cost subcompact, was first released in January 2006. Available as both a notchback and a hatchback, the current model gets three engine choices of natural aspiration–a 1.3L, 1.5L, and 1.6L.
